Canva Export Guide

The Golden Rule: Always Choose "PDF Print"

Canva defaults to PNG or PDF Standard, which compresses your images to 96–150 DPI for web screens. For sharp, professional prints at Sykes Printing, you must export as PDF Print (300 DPI) with Crop Marks & Bleed enabled.

How to Export Correctly from Canva

Turn on Print Bleed While Designing

Before downloading, check where your cut lines are so important elements don't get trimmed off:

Click File in the top-left menu.
Select View settings → check Show print bleed.

Bleed Rule: Stretch all background colors, photos, and patterns all the way to the outer dotted line. Keep all critical text, phone numbers, and logos at least 1/8" (0.125") inside the solid inner line (the safety zone).

Click the "Share" Button

In the top right corner of your Canva window, click the purple Share button, then choose Download from the menu.

Change File Type to "PDF Print"

Click the File type dropdown. By default Canva suggests PNG or PDF Standard.

Select PDF Print (with the label "Best for printing"). This outputs the file at full 300 DPI commercial press resolution.

Check "Crop Marks and Bleed"

Directly below the file type, you will see checkbox options:

Check Crop marks and bleed (Essential: tells our cutting machines exactly where to trim).
Check Flatten PDF (Recommended: merges layers into one single layer to prevent transparency glitches).

Select Color Profile

Commercial printing presses use 4-color process (CMYK):

Canva Pro Select CMYK

Choose CMYK (best for professional print) in the Color Profile dropdown.

Canva Free RGB is Okay!

Free accounts only export RGB. Don't worry! Sykes Printing's prepress team will color-calibrate your file before running.

Download & Upload to Sykes Printing

Click the purple Download button. Once the PDF is on your device, use Sykes Printing's secure file portal to send it directly to our shop.

5-Point Checklist Before You Send

Exported as "PDF Print" — Not PNG, JPEG, or Standard PDF.
Crop Marks and Bleed Checked — The PDF shows corner crop marks and extra bleed outside the trim area.
Safe Margins Respected — Text, contact info, and logos are at least 0.125" (1/8") away from the edge.
Correct Dimensions — The Canva canvas size matches your intended final printed piece (e.g. 3.5×2" for business cards, 24×36" for posters).
Proofread Text — Phone numbers, URLs, dates, and spelling verified.
